Ottawa Urban Signage

First Year Masters Studio  //  Fall 2016

Ottawa Urban Signage provides the City of Ottawa with a new facility to produce signage while attempting to increase residents interest into the industry through a unique piece of architecture. We interact with an immeasurable number of signs on a day to day basis but most people are not aware of the process and specificity that goes into fabricating them.

One of six small buildings that make up the sign fabrication process.

The building where vinyl is applied to the cut wood or metal signage.

The project was on the site of an existing building, an old City of Ottawa workshop. Part of the requirements was to interact with the existing building in some way. I chose to "hang" my new buildings off the existing structure to highlight the different programs and emphasize the symbiotic nature of signage.

The studio was also a comprehensive studio that required the completion of a working drawing set throughout the semester. It proved extremely difficult to detail such a complex structural relationship between existing and new elements.
